Appalachia Powerhouse to Bridge at Reliance Features
Mile Name Class
1.6
Thread the Needle

This rapid is split by a small island.  The left or right channels are both safe to run with the right channel being a little more difficult for the beginner.  You will often find boaters here trying to attain up the current, only to try to go in between the island, and the small rock infot of the island, hense threading the needle.

2.1
Mary Nell Point

This is about a 3 foot drop.  You know your are getting close when you see a small island on river left.

2
2.3
The Leslie

This is actually a squirt boat play area.  If you have your squirt boat you should be able to find this spot by putting in at the Big Bend parking area and then floating down 2 sets of shoals.  The bottom of the second shoal is where this is located.

2.5
Stairstep Rapid

This is about 1/4 mile of shallow ledges.  Stay to the right and follow the current as best you can down this rapid.  The left side ends up being more of a cheegrater for your boat.

The bottom river right of this rapid is known as "Lunch Spot".  Here you will see boaters eating their happy meals, and playing in the bottom hole to the ledges.

3.1
Little Rock Rapid

At about 3 miles in the river will be split by an island called Little Rock Island.  If you take the left channel you will encounter some quick moving water going over a small sliding ledge.

There is a neat cove you can paddle through shortly after this rapid.  Look to the right at the island till you see a pasage way and follow it through.  Noting special, just gives you that Disney ride feel.

3.2
Three Bears

If you choose to go right at Litle Rock Island and stick to river right there is a small wave train known as Three Bears.  Nothing really exciting here, so i would stick left.

4.0
Three Chutes

This rapid is located on river right and consist of 3 shoots.  The middle shoot is the most forward shoot where the right one is a little more techinical for the beginer.

The middle spot has some surfing opertunity, but somewhere in there is a nasty rock that has smacked me on the head to remind me, that even a class 2 river can be dangerous.

4.6
Devil's Shoals

This rapid is the most fun on the river.  Its nothing more than a bunch of big waves, and some fast moving current.  Normally what flips the begineers is the begining of this rapid if they arent starting off agressively paddling.

If you have the time this is a good rapid to swim.  By swim i mean practise your whitewater saftey float.  If you want to do this, eddy out to the left and walk up to the train tracks and back track till you see a path down.
